Check with your county or township road department before touching the ditch — most require a permit that sets a minimum pipe size and end treatment, and an inspection before you backfill.
Have utilities located, then mark the ditch centerline and driveway width with stakes and string so the excavation lines up with the ditch's existing flow line.
Cut the trench to the pipe's invert elevation, holding the ditch's existing slope through the crossing with a laser level — the outlet end has to sit lower than the inlet, continuously.
Place a few inches of compacted bedding stone, then set the pipe sections on it starting at the downstream end, seating each coupling band tight before backfilling around it.
Backfill evenly on both sides of the pipe at the same time so it isn't pushed out of alignment, compacting every few inches up to the specified cover over the crown.
Bolt on the flared end sections at both the inlet and outlet, then place the riprap apron so it covers the full length the calculation specifies at each end.

Road departments size culverts from a design storm, not from anything measured at the driveway: the Rational Method (Q = C·i·A) turns the watershed area, its ground cover and a regional rainfall intensity into a peak flow in cubic feet per second. That flow is then checked against each standard pipe's full-flow capacity — via Manning's equation, using the ditch slope and the pipe's roughness — and the smallest stock size that clears the flow is the answer. A pipe picked by eye or by matching the neighbor's driveway skips this entirely and is often undersized.
It depends far more on the watershed above the crossing than on the driveway itself — a half-acre wooded lot might only need a 12–15 inch pipe, while 10+ acres of cropland draining to the same ditch can call for 24 inches or more at the same slope. Steeper ditches let a smaller pipe carry the same flow, since capacity rises with the square root of slope. There's no reliable rule of thumb by driveway width alone; the watershed area and cover are what actually drive the number.
HDPE's smooth interior has roughly half the friction of corrugated metal, so it can carry more flow at the same diameter and slope, or use a smaller diameter for the same flow — it's also lighter to handle and won't rust out over decades. CMP is typically cheaper up front, more rigid under a heavy fill load, and easier to source in very large diameters from ag and road suppliers. Either is a legitimate choice; check what your road authority's permit allows before buying, since some jurisdictions restrict one or the other.
Yes, in almost every case. Water leaving a culvert exits at a concentrated velocity well above what the ditch normally sees, and bare soil at the outlet erodes fast — a scoured-out outlet is one of the most common ways a driveway culvert fails, undermining the pipe end and the fill around it within a season or two. A modest riprap apron at both the inlet and outlet spreads that energy out before it can dig a hole, and it's a small fraction of the total job cost.
Almost always, if the ditch is in a public road right-of-way. Most counties and townships require an entrance permit before you disturb the ditch, and that permit typically specifies a minimum pipe diameter, end treatment, and inspection before backfilling — regardless of what a hydraulic calculation says is sufficient. Check with your local road department first; installing a culvert without the permit can mean redoing the work at your own expense if it doesn't meet their standard.
Longer than just the driveway's width. The pipe has to reach past the base of the fill embankment on both sides, and that embankment slopes down from the pipe's crown height to the ditch invert — typically at a 2:1 (horizontal:vertical) slope for a rural driveway. A taller fill (a bigger pipe, or more cover over it) pushes the base of that slope further out on each side, which is why this calculator derives pipe length from the driveway width plus the embankment geometry, not the width alone.
