Project notes

  • This is a planning estimate, not an engineered gravity-wall design. A gabion wall resists load by its own weight and internal friction rather than by interlocking block or a footing, so the base width, batter and drainage all matter to how it actually performs.
  • Fill stone tonnage is the number nobody can eyeball — the same cage volume weighs a different amount depending on how the rock packs. Rounded 4–8 in stone settles tighter (less void, more weight per basket); angular 6–12 in stone leaves more air space and needs a touch less tonnage for the same cage.
  • The batter (stepping upper courses back to a shallower basket) is the standard way these walls taper their mass toward the top. It cuts stone and basket cost on the upper courses and improves stability, which is why it's on by default above a couple of courses.
  • Hand-place a course or two of face stone as you fill each basket so the visible side looks intentional, then dump-fill the rest of the cage loose behind it. Lace the lid shut under tension so the fill can't work the mesh loose over time.

How to estimate a gabion wall

Enter a gabion wall's length, height and basket depth and this calculator lays out the whole build: how many welded-wire baskets to buy at the size you pick, how many tons of rock fill the cages, the lacing wire or spiral binders that hold each basket's panels shut, and the geotextile fabric that keeps backfill from washing into the stone. A gabion wall resists by its own mass rather than by interlocking block, so the fill tonnage and basket count are the whole estimate — there's no cap course or adhesive to price.

Turn on the batter option to step the upper courses back to a shallower basket, which is how real gravity walls taper their mass toward the top instead of stacking the same heavy cage all the way up. Choose 4–8 in or 6–12 in fill rock, since the two pack to different bulk densities and change the tonnage for an identical cage volume, and pick wire or spiral lacing for how the panels get tied shut. Walls past about 8 ft move into engineered territory — this stays a materials estimate, not a stamped design.

How to build a gabion wall

    Lay out and excavate

    Mark the wall line with stakes and string, have utilities located, and dig a trench wide enough for the basket depth plus working room on each side, deep enough for a compacted pad under the base course.

    Build the foundation pad

    Fill the trench with crushed stone or well-compacted native soil and run a plate compactor over it until it's firm and level in both directions — this is what keeps the whole wall from settling unevenly.

  3. 3

    Assemble and set the base baskets

    Fold the flat-packed panels into a box, wire or spiral-lace the corners shut, and set the empty cages on the pad. Brace them square with stakes or scrap lumber so they don't rack while you fill.

    Tie in diaphragms

    For any basket over about 3 ft long, wire in the internal diaphragm panel that divides it into cells — this is what keeps the fill from bulging the mesh once it's loaded.

    Fill in lifts, facing the visible side

    Hand-place a course or two of larger, flatter stone against the visible face for a clean look, then loose-fill the rest of the cage behind it in stages, tamping lightly as you go rather than dumping it all at once.

    Lace the lid shut

    Once a basket is full and slightly crowned (fill settles a little), close the lid panel under tension with wire or spirals so the mesh can't work loose as the stone shifts.

    Step back the next course

    Set the next course's baskets back onto the fill of the one below, using a shallower cage if this course is inside the batter zone, and repeat the tie-fill-lace sequence.

    Backfill with the fabric in place

    Roll geotextile up the excavated face behind the top of the wall before backfilling, and grade the finished surface to shed water away from the wall rather than toward it.

How much stone do I need to fill a gabion wall?

Multiply the cage volume — wall length times height times basket depth — by the bulk density of your fill rock, then convert to tons. Rock isn't solid inside a basket; it packs with air space between pieces, so bulk density (not solid rock density) is what matters, and it runs roughly 100–110 lb per cubic foot for typical 4–12 in fill. This calculator does that conversion for you and adds a settling allowance, since loose fill compacts a bit after the first season.

What size gabion baskets should I use?

Basket depth (front-to-back) is what sets both stability and stone volume, and it comes in standard tiers — 18 in, 3 ft and 4.5 ft are what suppliers actually stock. Deeper baskets at the base give a wider footprint for a taller wall to resist overturning; shallower baskets are common for the upper, battered courses where less mass is needed. Basket length (6 or 9 ft) is mostly a handling and shipping choice — longer baskets mean fewer units to assemble but are heavier to maneuver into place empty.

Should I use lacing wire or spiral binders?

Both close the seams where basket panels meet and tie internal diaphragms in place — the choice is speed versus tradition. Lacing wire is twisted tight with pliers a few inches at a time and is what most manufacturers ship as standard; it's cheap and forgiving but slow on a long run. Spiral (helical) binders spin into the mesh with a dedicated tool in a fraction of the time and hold just as well, which is why crews doing multiple baskets a day usually switch to them.

How tall can I build a gabion wall without an engineer?

There's no single number, but most DIY guidance treats roughly 6 ft as where you should start getting a geotechnical opinion, and 8–10 ft as where you need one plus a permit in most jurisdictions. Gabion walls are more forgiving of minor settlement than rigid block or poured concrete, which is part of their appeal, but overturning and sliding are still real failure modes once a wall gets tall — the batter and base width both have to be sized to the actual soil, not guessed.

What goes behind a gabion wall?

A layer of non-woven geotextile fabric between the baskets and the excavated soil face, running up the back and under the base, so backfill can't wash through the mesh and into the stone over time. Unlike a poured or block wall, a gabion structure is intentionally free-draining — water passes through the rockfill instead of building up hydrostatic pressure behind it, which is one of the reasons it needs no separate drain pipe the way a sealed wall does.
