It handles a simple one-wall reach-in closet as well as an L-shaped or U-shaped walk-in with inside corners.

Every quantity is rounded to a real shelf section or bracket count you can hand to a store, not a raw square-footage number, and it does not cover a full closet remodel with drywall, paint or a new door.

Measure every wall the shelf will follow — the opening width for a reach-in, plus each return wall for an L- or U-shaped walk-in — and use the calculator to get your section count, bracket count and hardware list.
Mark the shelf height (typically 66" for a single hang, or two lines for double hang) with a 4 ft level, carrying the line around every inside corner so both walls match.
Find and mark the studs behind your line, then lay out bracket positions at your chosen spacing, favoring a stud hit over an exact even spacing wherever the two are close.
Drive brackets into studs where you can and rated anchors everywhere else, including a dedicated bracket or flange right at each inside corner.
Cut shelf sections to length for each wall run, mitering or butting them tight at inside corners, and set them onto the bracket track or clips.
Cut the rod to length, snap in the end sockets and any corner flanges, and add a center support on any run longer than about 8 ft to stop it from bowing under a full load.
If you're adding one, repeat the bracket and shelf steps at the lower height, keeping it low enough to clear the hanging rod above it.
Push down on the shelf and pull on the rod before loading the closet for real — a bracket that flexes now will fail later, and it's far easier to add one more anchor today.

Measure the linear feet of wall the shelf will run along — for a reach-in closet that's just the opening width, and for an L- or U-shaped walk-in you add the return wall length(s) too. Shelving is sold in fixed lengths topping out around 12 ft, so this calculator converts your total run into whole sections at that stock length, adding a small waste allowance for the miter or butt cuts at inside corners.
Wire (ventilated) shelving is cheaper, lets air circulate so stored clothes and linens don't musty, and is the fastest DIY install since it clips onto a track. Melamine is a solid, flat laminated board that looks more like built-in furniture, holds small or oddly-shaped items without them falling through the gaps, and needs slightly heavier brackets or a cleat. Closets for shoes, folded knits or bins usually do better with a solid melamine surface; hanging-clothes closets do fine with wire.
24 inches on center is a reasonable default for mixed folded storage. Tighten that to 16 inches for anything dense — stacked bins, books, shoes — since a shelf loaded heavier than it's spaced for will sag or pull out over time. You can open spacing up toward 32 inches for light, bulky items like blankets or pillows, but that's the upper end even for wire shelving rated for it.
Single hang is one rod at standard hanging height (about 66 inches) with a shelf above it, sized for long items like dresses and coats. Double hang splits the same wall into two independent rods — one upper for shirts or folded-over pants, one lower — which roughly doubles usable hanging space on the same wall but also roughly doubles the rod, socket and bracket count, since each rod needs its own support row.
Wherever possible, yes — a bracket driven into a stud carries far more load than one relying on a hollow-wall anchor alone, and a fully loaded shelf of folded clothes or bins is heavier than most people expect. Where your bracket spacing doesn't land on a stud, use a rated hollow-wall or toggle-style anchor sized to the actual load, not a light-duty plastic anchor meant for picture frames.
An L-shaped closet has one inside corner where two walls meet, and a U-shaped closet has two. Each corner needs its own bracket or flange rather than a shared standard-spacing bracket, plus a rod flange if a rod carries around the corner — most walk-ins actually run a separate rod segment on each wall rather than bending one rod through the corner. Budget an extra cut and a slightly tighter fit at every inside corner.
