Enter your room's length and width along with your tile size, and the Drop Ceiling Calculator lays out the whole suspended grid — main tees running the room's length, 4 ft cross tees locking them together every two feet, wall angle around the perimeter, and however many hanger wires it takes to hold the grid level below the joists or deck above. It totals the tile count too, sized to your tile choice and adjusted for any recessed light panels you're planning to drop in.
Switch between 2×2 and 2×4 tiles and the whole grid recalculates, because a 2×2 layout needs an extra row of 2 ft cross tees bisecting every module that a 2×4 layout skips entirely. Set your plenum depth to size the hanger wire, and add light fixtures to see how many tiles they displace and how many extra support wires code requires for them. This is a planning estimate, not an engineered layout — actual border tile width still depends on centering the grid in the room.

Decide your plenum depth, then use a laser or water level to mark that height around every wall in the room. The wall angle's top edge sits right on this line, so it has to be dead level or every tee that lands on it will be off.
Fasten the L-shaped wall angle to the studs or masonry along your level line around the full perimeter, mitering the inside and outside corners so the two legs meet cleanly.
Snap chalk lines across the ceiling above for each main tee run, spaced 4 ft apart, then mark hanger wire points along those lines at your chosen spacing, with one near each end wall.
Drive an eye screw into the joist or deck at each marked point and attach a length of hanger wire, leaving enough slack to twist it tight once the tee is in place.
Rest each main tee's ends on the wall angle, thread it onto its hanger wires, and twist the wire tight so the tee sits level with the wall angle line the whole run.
Lock 4 ft cross tees into the main tee slots every 2 ft, then add 2 ft cross tees bisecting each module if you're running 2×2 tile. Check the grid stays square as you go.
Set any recessed light panels into their openings and tie off their independent support wires to the structure above before you place a single tile — it's much harder to reach once the field is filled in.
Measure and score border tiles to fit the perimeter, then tilt and drop in the remaining full tiles working from one end of the room to the other.

Most manufacturers and codes call for at least 3 inches of clearance between the old ceiling or joists and the new grid so tiles can still tilt up and out for access. Give yourself more — 6 to 8 inches is a common target — if you're running recessed lighting, ductwork, or plumbing through the space, since all of that eats into the same gap the tiles need to lift through.
The standard is a hanger wire every 4 ft along each main tee, with one within 4 inches of every wall the tee runs into. Heavier loads — HVAC diffusers, a dense run of recessed fixtures, or a seismic zone — call for tighter 2 ft spacing, which roughly doubles the wire and eye-screw count.
