The panel count comes from a genuine layout solve: the calculator picks the number of bays whose resulting width lands closest to your target spacing, then divides the actual run evenly across that many bays plus stiles at each break — so a bay never runs short at the last panel the way a flat division would.
  • Flat-panel (shaker) construction uses a thin plywood or MDF backer set behind a frame of stiles and rails, with a strip of applied moulding run around each bay to fake the look of a raised panel — that moulding and backer are what carry the finished look, not the stile stock. Beadboard construction swaps that backer-plus-moulding assembly for a single tongue-and-groove panel sheet milled with the bead pattern already in it, which installs faster but can't take a picture-frame moulding look.
  • The base rail is sized to land on top of your existing baseboard rather than replace it — pulling and replacing baseboard to match a new wainscot height is a separate trim job this calculator doesn't price. If your baseboard is unusually tall or short, the base rail may need a wider or narrower reveal than the default assumes.
  • Stile spacing between 12 and 18 inches reads as traditional Victorian-style wainscoting; pushing toward 20–24 inches gives a more modern, minimal look with fewer, wider panels. Either way, keep the spacing consistent across the whole run — irregular bay widths are the fastest way to make a DIY wainscot job look off from across the room.
  • Oak or other stain-grade species need veneer-face plywood behind a shaker panel because the panel face shows through a clear finish; MDF and paint-grade poplar can use plain paint-grade backer since it's fully hidden under the applied moulding and paint.

    Measure the run and solve the layout

    Measure the continuous wall run you're paneling and use the calculator to solve the bay count and width for your target spacing — write the solved bay width down before you touch a saw.

    Mark the layout with a story pole

    Transfer the solved stile positions onto a layout stick or directly onto the wall in pencil, checking it against door and window trim so no stile lands awkwardly close to an opening.

    Install the base and cap rails

    Level and fasten the base rail on top of the existing baseboard and the cap rail at your wainscot height, nailing into studs wherever the layout allows and backing up with construction adhesive between studs.

    Set the stiles

    Cut and install each stile plumb between the rails at the marked spacing, checking every one with a level before nailing — a stile that's even slightly out of plumb throws off every panel next to it.

    Fill the panels

    For flat panels, cut the backer sheet to fit each bay and glue and nail it in place, then miter and install the applied moulding around the inside edge. For beadboard, cut and drop the tongue-and-groove insert into each bay and pin it at the edges.

    Set nails and fill

    Set every visible nail head below the surface and fill the holes, along with any coped or mitered joints in the moulding, with paintable wood filler.

    Caulk every seam

    Run a thin bead of paintable caulk along the rail seams, stile joints and moulding miters so they read as continuous once painted, but keep it out of the panel reveal itself.

    Prime and finish

    Prime raw wood (MDF comes pre-primed), then apply two coats of paint, or a coat of stain followed by a wipe-on polyurethane topcoat for a stain-grade species.

Panel (bay) count depends on your target spacing, not a fixed number — this calculator divides your total wall run by roughly your target panel width plus one stile per gap, then solves for the exact bay count and width that split the run evenly with no leftover sliver at the end. A 25 ft run at an 18 in target typically lands around 14 panels each about 17–18 in wide, with 15 stiles framing them.

What height should wainscoting be?

Traditional wainscoting runs 32 to 36 inches, roughly a third of an 8 ft wall and just above chair-rail height. Taller rooms or a more formal look can push to 38–42 in, but past about 36 in it starts to read as full wall paneling rather than a wainscot band — pairing a slightly heavier cap rail helps the proportions still look deliberate. Keep it well clear of window sills if the room has low ones.

Flat panel or beadboard wainscoting — which is easier?

Beadboard is the faster build: one tongue-and-groove sheet drops into the stile/rail frame with no separate moulding to miter. Flat (shaker-style) panels take longer because you're installing a backer sheet and then coping or mitering applied moulding around every single bay, but they give the crisper, more formal picture-frame look most builders associate with traditional wainscoting. Budget more caulk and filler time for the flat-panel route.

Do I need to remove my baseboard first?
