Choose flat shaker-style panels built from a backer sheet and applied moulding, or a faster tongue-and-groove beadboard insert, in primed MDF, paint-grade poplar or stain-grade oak. Nudging the target panel width doesn't just relabel the total — a narrower target adds real stiles and moulding, while a wider one trims both. Because this stops at chair-rail height rather than covering the whole wall, it deducts door openings and assumes your existing baseboard stays put underneath the new base rail; a full baseboard swap is a separate job it doesn't price.

Measure the continuous wall run you're paneling and use the calculator to solve the bay count and width for your target spacing — write the solved bay width down before you touch a saw.
Transfer the solved stile positions onto a layout stick or directly onto the wall in pencil, checking it against door and window trim so no stile lands awkwardly close to an opening.
Level and fasten the base rail on top of the existing baseboard and the cap rail at your wainscot height, nailing into studs wherever the layout allows and backing up with construction adhesive between studs.
Cut and install each stile plumb between the rails at the marked spacing, checking every one with a level before nailing — a stile that's even slightly out of plumb throws off every panel next to it.
For flat panels, cut the backer sheet to fit each bay and glue and nail it in place, then miter and install the applied moulding around the inside edge. For beadboard, cut and drop the tongue-and-groove insert into each bay and pin it at the edges.
Set every visible nail head below the surface and fill the holes, along with any coped or mitered joints in the moulding, with paintable wood filler.
Run a thin bead of paintable caulk along the rail seams, stile joints and moulding miters so they read as continuous once painted, but keep it out of the panel reveal itself.
Prime raw wood (MDF comes pre-primed), then apply two coats of paint, or a coat of stain followed by a wipe-on polyurethane topcoat for a stain-grade species.

Panel (bay) count depends on your target spacing, not a fixed number — this calculator divides your total wall run by roughly your target panel width plus one stile per gap, then solves for the exact bay count and width that split the run evenly with no leftover sliver at the end. A 25 ft run at an 18 in target typically lands around 14 panels each about 17–18 in wide, with 15 stiles framing them.
Traditional wainscoting runs 32 to 36 inches, roughly a third of an 8 ft wall and just above chair-rail height. Taller rooms or a more formal look can push to 38–42 in, but past about 36 in it starts to read as full wall paneling rather than a wainscot band — pairing a slightly heavier cap rail helps the proportions still look deliberate. Keep it well clear of window sills if the room has low ones.
Beadboard is the faster build: one tongue-and-groove sheet drops into the stile/rail frame with no separate moulding to miter. Flat (shaker-style) panels take longer because you're installing a backer sheet and then coping or mitering applied moulding around every single bay, but they give the crisper, more formal picture-frame look most builders associate with traditional wainscoting. Budget more caulk and filler time for the flat-panel route.
No — this calculator assumes your existing baseboard stays in place and the new base rail sits on top of it, which is the standard retrofit approach and avoids a separate baseboard-replacement job. If your baseboard is unusually tall, thin, or already has an ornate profile, measure the reveal it leaves under the base rail before you finalize your wainscot height, since a very tall baseboard can eat into the panel field.
Primed MDF is the cheapest and most common choice for a painted wainscot — it's stable, pre-primed, and takes paint cleanly, but it needs a full moisture-free room. Paint-grade poplar costs more but resists dings a little better and can be stained in a pinch. Reserve solid oak for a stain-grade room where you want the wood grain to show; it costs roughly two and a half times MDF and needs veneer-face plywood behind any flat panel so the grain matches.
Materials for a primed MDF flat-panel wainscot typically run in the neighborhood of $20–30 per linear foot of wall run once you include stiles, rails, backer, moulding, fasteners and finish — beadboard trims that down a bit by skipping the applied moulding. Poplar runs meaningfully higher and stain-grade oak higher still. Labor is the bigger swing if you're hiring it out; a DIYer comfortable with a miter saw can install a modest room's worth over a weekend.
