  • Estimates are a planning aid. Sheet count is the wall and ceiling area, less a deduction for door and window openings, divided by the sheet size, plus waste for cuts and offcuts that can't be reused.
  • Bigger 4×12 sheets mean fewer joints to tape and a flatter finished wall, but they're heavy and need two people. 4×8 sheets are easier to handle solo in tight spaces — the calculator switches the count to match.
  • Plan on roughly one bucket of joint compound per five sheets for a standard three-coat finish: a tape coat, a fill coat, and a thin finish coat, sanding between the last two.
  • Hang the ceiling first and the walls tight underneath it, stagger the joints, and keep seams away from the corners of openings. Prime with a PVA primer before painting so the patched and papered areas don't flash through.

How to estimate a drywall

How to hang and finish drywall

A step-by-step walkthrough to go with your plan above. Follow the product instructions and any local code or permit requirements as you work.

    Measure and order

    Use the calculator to get your sheet count from the room size and openings, plus the mud, tape, screws and primer. Decide on 4×8 or 4×12 sheets based on access and whether you have a helper.

    Hang the ceiling first

    Board the ceiling before the walls, using a lift or a helper, so the wall sheets butt up tight underneath and support the ceiling edges. Drive screws to a slight dimple without breaking the paper.

  3. 3

    Hang the walls

    Run the sheets horizontally, staggering the end joints and keeping seams away from door and window corners. Cut openings for outlets and fixtures as you go with a rotary tool or keyhole saw.

  4. 4

    Tape the joints

    Bed paper tape into a layer of compound over every seam and inside corner, and set corner bead on the outside corners. Press out the excess so the tape lies flat.

  5. 5

    Coat and feather

    Apply a fill coat, let it dry, then a thinner finish coat, feathering each one wider than the last with progressively bigger knives so the joints disappear into the wall.

    Sand smooth

    Once everything is dry, sand the joints flat with a pole sander, working in good light and checking with your hand for ridges. Knock down any nibs without gouging the paper.

    Prime and paint

    Wipe off the dust, roll on a coat of PVA primer so the surface paints evenly, then finish with your topcoat. Touch up any flashing spots before the final coat.

How many sheets of drywall do I need?

Add up the wall area (the room's perimeter times the ceiling height) plus the ceiling area if you're boarding it, subtract roughly 15 square feet for each door and window, then divide by the sheet size — 32 square feet for a 4×8 or 48 for a 4×12 — and add about 10% for waste. This calculator does it all from your room dimensions and the openings you enter.

How much joint compound and tape do I need?

A good rule of thumb is about one standard 4.5-gallon bucket of all-purpose compound for every five sheets of drywall, which covers taping plus a three-coat finish. For tape, one 250-foot roll covers roughly 450 to 600 square feet of board. The calculator sizes both, plus corner bead for your outside corners and primer for the whole area.

Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 sheets?

Bigger 4×12 sheets create fewer seams to tape and finish, which means a flatter wall and less work overall — pros prefer them. The trade-off is weight and maneuverability: they're heavy and hard to carry up stairs or work solo. For tight spaces, remodels, or one-person jobs, 4×8 sheets are far easier to handle. The calculator adjusts the sheet count for whichever you pick.

Do I need to prime new drywall before painting?

Yes. New drywall is a mix of very porous paper face and smoother joint compound, and paint soaks into them unevenly, so the finished and taped areas 'flash' through as dull patches. A coat of PVA drywall primer evens out that porosity so your topcoat looks uniform and covers in fewer coats. The calculator includes the primer in the takeoff.
